VI. CONTEMPLATIVE ACTION
To Return to the Act Over Time
Contemplative Action is the Door through which a Unit becomes a place of return.
The work is not created in one moment and then completed. The person may return to the same carrier again and again, over months, years or an entire lifetime.
Each return is a new action.
There is no need to fill the surface quickly, reach a predetermined image or produce a visible result within a fixed period of time. The rhythm of the Unit follows the rhythm of the person who creates it.
The act can be slow, silent and deliberate.
A bead may be added after a long pause. Another may appear days, months or years later. The intervals between actions become part of the work as much as the actions themselves.
In this Door, continuation is not repetition for its own sake.
Returning to the Unit creates a recurring encounter with one’s own presence at different moments of life.
The carrier remains, while the person changes.
Each new act enters the same field from another point in time.
The Unit therefore accumulates not only material traces, but duration.
Example
I AM PRESENT is a lifetime Unit created through the Contemplative Action Door.
The Unit consists of a white linen field measuring 100 × 80 cm and white beads.
I will begin the work on 7 October 2026 and return to it throughout my life.
The beads will be sewn in silence.
There is no predetermined number of beads and no requirement to complete the surface. I will return to the Unit when I choose to act, and each action will become part of the same continuing work.
The Unit will change gradually while remaining connected to one continuous carrier.
A bead added at the beginning of the work and a bead added decades later will exist within the same field, but they will belong to different moments of one life.
Its completion will not be determined by composition, density or visual fullness. The lifetime of the artist defines the duration of the work.
The Unit will remain as a material record of repeated presence across time.
Conclusion
The Contemplative Action Door creates the possibility of making art without forcing time toward completion.
A Unit can accompany a person rather than simply being produced by them.
It can become a place to return to, where action, silence, change and duration accumulate within one material field.
Here, time does not surround the work.
Time enters it.
