THE CARRIER

The Carrier is the material basis that receives the act.

It is not merely a surface on which the bead is fixed. The Carrier establishes the material conditions in which the act takes place. Its material, form, scale, colour, texture, function, history, and existing meaning may all become part of the Unit.

Before the act, the Carrier exists in a particular condition. Once a bead is fixed through a real human act, that condition changes. The physical change may be minimal, but the Carrier is no longer identical to what it was before.

Within Bead Impact Art, a Carrier may enter the Unit in three different ways.

I. CREATED CARRIER

A Created Carrier is established by the artist specifically for the Unit.

The artist determines its artistic condition: scale, colour, surface, texture, material qualities, and other characteristics relevant to the act.

The material itself does not have to be physically produced by the artist. A ready-made canvas, textile, or other material may be used. What matters is that its artistic condition is established by the artist rather than inherited from an existing independent image, authorship, history, or meaning.

The artist creates the conditions in which the act will occur.

II. ADOPTED CARRIER

An Adopted Carrier is an already existing material, object, garment, accessory, or other form chosen to receive the act without its previous identity becoming the central subject of the Unit.

The Carrier may already have a practical function, design, material history, or previous use.

Its existence is acknowledged, but the act is not created primarily as a dialogue with that identity.

The object becomes the material basis through which a new act is introduced and a Unit comes into being.

III. DIALOGIC CARRIER

A Dialogic Carrier already holds an independent image, authorship, history, symbolism, cultural meaning, recognisable identity, or other content with which the new act intentionally enters into relation.

The existing identity of the Carrier remains acknowledged.

The new act does not erase or replace what existed before. It introduces another material fact in relation to it.

An existing artwork, photograph, historical object, cultural artefact, branded object, image, or other meaningful material may therefore become a Dialogic Carrier.

The physical production of the Carrier does not determine whether it is dialogic. An artist may personally print, reproduce, prepare, or assemble an existing image or reference. If the previous authorship, identity, history, or meaning remains part of the intended relation, the Carrier is dialogic.

Through the new act, the Carrier becomes part of a Unit while preserving the identity and history that preceded it.

The distinction between these forms depends on the relation of the act to the Carrier.

A Carrier may be created for the act, adopted as an existing material basis, or entered through conscious dialogue with what it already carries.

In every case, the Carrier receives the act and is changed by it.

The bead fixes the act.
The Carrier receives the act.
Through their relation, the Unit comes into being.
