V. SOCIAL PARTICIPATION

To Create Individual Units Within a Shared Social Process

Social Participation is the Door through which people enter Bead Impact Art together while each person creates their own individual Unit.

The participants share time, space, attention, conversation, observation, and the experience of action. They may influence the atmosphere of the group and encounter one another’s decisions. But each person remains the Acting Person of their own Unit.

Each Unit has its own Carrier, bead, purpose, sequence of actions, and completion.

The individual Unit does not dissolve into the group.

Social Participation does not ask people to create the same image, follow one visual result, or express the same idea. It does not require uniformity in colour, placement, rhythm, number of beads, pace, or meaning.

Every person may enter from their own experience.

One person may work in silence. Another may speak. One may create one bead. Another may continue over time. One person may know exactly why they are acting, while another may discover the purpose through the process itself.

What is shared is not a predetermined result.

What is shared is the social condition of acting beside one another.

Social Participation may take place in a school, educational programme, museum, cultural institution, care environment, youth group, community organisation, workplace, neighbourhood, or another gathering of people.

It can include children, adults, older people, artists, people with no artistic experience, and people who require different forms of support.

The structure of participation may be adapted to the people involved. Materials may be prepared, time may be extended, communication may take different forms, and support may assist the action without replacing the Acting Person.

The artist, organiser, educator, or facilitator creates the conditions for participation. They may introduce Bead Impact Art, prepare materials, establish the space, and support the process.

But they do not determine what each person must create.

Each Acting Person chooses how to enter their own Unit.

Social Participation is different from Community.

In Community, many people act within one shared Carrier and create one Shared Unit.

In Social Participation, people take part in one shared process while each person creates an individual Unit.

The Units may be displayed together, documented together, or returned to their individual creators. They may remain close through the memory of a shared encounter, even though each Unit preserves a different act.

Through Social Participation, a group becomes a space in which individual action and social relation can exist at the same time.

Each person remains distinct.

Each action remains their own.

The experience of creating becomes shared.
